In an attempt to ensure more transparency in the maintenance of attendance records, the University of Pune (UoP) has installed 48 biometric attendance machines in its various departments on the varsity campus. The new academic session of the varsity is to begin on August 1.
So far thumb impressions of 300 of a total of 330 members of the teaching staff and 887 non-teaching staff have been recorded. At present, the trail runs of the biometric machines are going on and they are expected to be functional after the colleges reopen. As per an earlier issued circular by Registrar ML Jadhavs office, all the 628 UoP-affiliated colleges will also instal such facilities before March 31.
The management council of the UoP took the decision to install the biometric machines in December as per the guidelines of the government resolution issued on October 27,2010. This is a much better and reliable system to record attendance than the tedious process of going through the muster rolls. Also, the manual process leaves a lot of scope for tampering. We hope it will help us deal with complaints of the staff not coming to the classes on time, said Jadhav.
Principal of Nowrosjee Wadia College Bhagwan Thakur said,We have installed the machines and are using them. They will bring a sense of accountability among the staff. After the implementation of sixth pay commission,we get very good salary. So teachers should have the will to spend at least five to six hours on the campus. Biometric system will make monitoring easier.
