The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) today told the Chief Judicial Magistrates court in Nashik that it cannot completely rule out the possibility of Sheikh Lalbaba Mohammed Hussain Farid alias Bilals involvement in the German Bakery blast in Pune.
Bilal was arrested on September 7 for his alleged role in heading a sleeper cell in Nashik and for allegedly scouting targets in Nashik, including the Maharashtra Police Academy, the Police Commissionerate and Nashik Cantonment at Deolali,at the behest of one of the conspirators of the German Bakery blast Mirza Himayat Baig (29). Meanwhile,Baig was today transferred to Nashik where the court granted the investigators his custody for 11 days.
Bilals link was raised by Special Prosecutor for ATS Ajay Misar while seeking the custody of Baig for the Nashik offence. Baig, has so far been identified as the planter, bomb maker and a co-conspirator in the February 13 German Bakery blast, along with Indian Mujahideens Mohsin Chaudhary and their leader Yasin Bhatkal.
The ATS surrendered the police custody of Bilal earlier after they had questioned him in two separate sessions. For the first time,we sought the custody of an accused again after surrendering him on the basis of the result of the identification parade of Baig. Considering that identity parade had positive results where people gave good leads and identified the accused,we felt the need to interrogate Baig and Bilal in presence of each other, said Misar.
The ATS has informed the court that phone records of Bilal and Baig show active communication. They stayed together in Latur for a considerable time. This puts the probe in a very crucial stage where we need to know what was the nature of the interaction.
