The Pune rural police on Thursday arrested the two accused — Sumit Prakas Gawli of Lonavala and Jafar Shaikh of Hingavli — in the murder of Lonavala Municipal Council chief Bhupendra Choudhary. With this, the number of arrests in the case has reached four. The police had earlier arrested Sumit’s cousin Vaibhav Gawli (28) and Nandu Aurange, both from Lonavala. The police suspect that the murder was the fallout of political rivalry. Vaibhav and Aurange were produced before the Lonavala court and have been remanded to police custody till Monday. On Tuesday, the accused had allegedly attacked Choudhary with a sharp weapon at his office. They had also attacked Umesh Mudliyar, member of the education board of council, who was present in the office. Mudliyar is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
