After the infamous Monkeygate incident where cricketer Harbhajan Singh faced accusations of making racist comments against Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds, the turbanator has made amends of sorts by signing up as the brand ambassador for Aromas,an Australian coffee retail chain.
Bhajji,as he is popularly known, was in town on Thursday to pay a visit to the chains outlet on FC Road. I wouldnt mind sharing a coffee with (Andrew) Symonds, provided he pays for it, he joked.
Bhajji said he cannot do without his morning cup of coffee even on match days.
He expressed concern over the impending decline of slow bowlers owing to the increase in the pace of the game.
The game has become faster, boundaries have become smaller and the future looks bleak for the slow bowlers,he said. That Test cricket is being overshadowed by the T20 format is apparent and Bhajji is not impressed by this. Test cricket is the purest form of cricket, which reveals true talent. Anyone can play T20, he said.
At the same time,he also expressed his satisfaction at being part of the Mumbai Indians team.
According to him, teams should be able to keep at least three players in terms of player retention policy.
It has taken me three years to develop a fan following and to really settle into the Mumbai Indians team. If I was told to shift to Kochi for the next season,it would be very unsettling for me. I am sure other players too feel the same way and each player should have the choice of whether to shift or not,he said.
He also denied any chance of a transfer to the Sahara Pune Warriors. I am enjoying my cricket with the Mumbai Indians and if I were to be in Pune,it would only be for the coffee,he said.
As for the immediate future,he will be looking forward to a good performance in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. He will be up against Muttiah Muralitharan his Sri Lankan counterpart and spin icon for the last time,as the latter recently announced his retirement after the first Test.
Despite Muralis comments,Bhajji does not feel he can break the Lankans record.
There cannot be another Muralitharan. He is a legend,a brilliant cricketer,a great friend and my hero. Cricket will miss him ,he said.
