Being Cyrus

A nurse wanted him to be funny in the hospital where he went to admit his son while an elderly woman left him speechless as she walked up to him in a party, demanding a joke.

From politics to sports Cyrus Broacha’s inimitable take on every topic under the sun had listeners in splits

A nurse wanted him to be funny in the hospital where he went to admit his son while an elderly woman left him speechless as she walked up to him in a party, demanding a joke. Cyrus Broacha indeed can’t afford to be serious. And barring a few instances, humor is too impulsive for the man whose comedy is inclusive of the gravest on-goings in the country. In the city as the chief guest for the Annual Day of Young Indians (Yi) he left the audience rolling in the aisle.

Giving a tongue-in-cheek account of many celebrities commenting on the survival of IPL he quipps,”With new relations surfacing, war of words hitting headlines and money changing hands IPL has become an Ekta Kapoor serial now. While I am not too sure of Modi’s survival, the game is here to survive for sure.”

Known for his wit on the show The Week That Wasn’t along with Kunal Vijaykar,Broacha will also be seen in its Hindi version -Faking News. “Humour in Hindi can be a tough task because of the complexity of the language and the show can sound even more insulting than its English counterpart. The television channel head has had complaints in the past,Kapil Dev once felt offended and I apologised to him. But there are more pleasant surprises like the one when Union Minister P Chidambaram came to me at an airport and appreciated the show in spite of we having done his spoofs several times,” he adds.

Having started as a VJ on MTV and been a part of many lines of work in the media,Broacha prefers calling himself a television guy adding that films, writing and theatre are his hobbies. “Moreover, people are more friendly towards you when you are on television rather than when a film star. We are like the middle class and we change with times. Yet I think Office Office was the best comedy I have ever come across. The jokes on television these days are like stories that make you laugh after they end. Most of the times, there is very little observation and creativity displayed by the performers. I feel jokes can be funnier when they are told while finding humour in a culture to which it is very intrinsic. That’s the reason I often crack Parsi jokes,” he smiles.

Next in line is the film- Happily Divorced, where Broacha will be seen with Sanjay Dutt and Kangna Ranaut. Meanwhile,he is also busy writing his second book. Although Karl,Aaj aur Kal his semi-autobiographical comedy on celebrities and politics did not fetch great reviews he adds,”In fact it was on the best sellers list for three weeks, apparently did a good sale in Nepal and I have been asked to write a second book which makes me tense again.”
