The 21-year-old BBA student who was killed in Pune’s Wagholi Tuesday evening was an orphan and the orphanage where he lived funded his education, said the principal of his college.
The final-year student had a viva voce examination Tuesday and the accused attacked him with a machete when he stepped out of the college to get a few photocopies, according to college sources.
The victim was allegedly in a same-sex relationship with the 40-year-old accused, who works at a construction site. Two police teams have begun a search for him.
According to eyewitnesses, before losing consciousness, the student told them the name of the accused and that the attack was a fallout of strains in their relationship.
“He was a pleasant student decent in studies who had good relations with everybody. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by this sudden loss,” said the college principal.
A teacher said, “He was an ordinary, quiet and friendly student. There had not been much personal interaction between us but the incident is rather sad and shocking.”
Barely anything about his family, if any, or his past is known, but the student had several plans for the future, said the caretaker of the orphanage where he had been living since 2014.
“Few of our children go on to study as much as he did. He was hoping to get a job after completing his BBA degree. He has been with us for several years since he came from another ashram in Baramati. All his education was taken care of by our organisation.”
“He did not seem worried, and I have never seen him involved in fights. He had told us about that person (the accused) as a friend, but we did not know anymore,” he added.
