Pune reported another positive case for Zika virus on Friday as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) stepped up its surveillance. A 22-year-old man tested positive on Friday becoming the fourth person in Pune to test positive for the Zika virus.

On Thursday, the health department of the PMC sent out a letter to private practitioners asking them to report cases of vector borne diseases to the civic body.

Earlier this week a medical practitioner and his 15-year-old daughter had tested positive for the Zika virus. After that a third case of Zika had tested negative. Meanwhile, in a letter to all hospitals and private practitioners, the PMC asked them to report cases of vector borne diseases. Similar instructions were given to private laboratories and diagnostics centres.

PMC carried out special drives and surveillance in certain areas to control and destroy mosquito breeding spots.

A 22-year-old boy from Mundhwa who tested positive on Friday became the fourth person in Pune to test positive for Zika. He is the son of the woman who was first suspected with Zika (tested positive with Zika at a private lab) but a month later tested negative when NIV collected a sample.

As part of the surveillance 13 samples collected from the family and neighbours and one tested positive. PMC health officials mentioned that the man was asymptomatic.

According to them, considering the mother was a suspected case who had tested positive for ZSika at a private lab in the first week of June, the total number of cases is now at 4.
