The Air Hostess Academy (AHA) imbroglio in the city where 400 students are seeking proper placement from the academy has taken a fresh turn. Joint director of technical education has decided to forward the case to the state government,if the institute fails to provide on Friday proof of its affiliation to Cambridge University as well as other documents of proof for running the institute.

The move comes after the students from the academy staged a demonstration on Monday demanding a refund of the fees of over Rs 1 lakh by each student. The institute that offers training for airhostesses, flight stewards and ground staffers, faces charges of misleading students by its claims about its affiliation to the University of Cambridge (International Examinations),UK. The students have accused the academy of not fulfilling its course commitments such as in-flight training and proper course certificates.

Joint director, technical education,Dayanand Meshram told The Indian Express that he had given a week to the director of the Pune branch of AHA to provide details. “Even after a week, the institute has failed to furnish any details regarding its affiliation to Cambridge University, the veracity of the course certificates and the organisation that certifies them. The director of the Pune institute was to provide the details by Friday. If I do not get any feedback by tomorrow,I will refer the case to the state government,” he said.

Sapna Gupta, director,AHA,was not available for comment. An officer at the institute said the report to DTE was being ‘put together’. No decision has been taken regarding the refund of fees,it is learnt.

“If the institute fails to provide the necessary details then the students can seek police intervention,” said Meshram. Students who have been agitating for over two months want their fees back but are not keen to go the police. Vinita Barate,a student of 2008-09 batch, who is awaiting both course certificate and placement, said,“There seems to be no tie-up with the University of Cambridge. I have paid Rs 1.28 lakh and I want my money back.” Another student, who did not wish to be named, managed to get a placement on her own and had participated in the bheek mango andolan said the institute had promised placements to the girls as flight attendants but they never happened. Some students were being placed as housekeepers which was not acceptable, she said.
