Can life be reinvented at 50? Vandana Irani, now known as DJ VanD, is living proof that it can.

Vandana Irani or DJ VanD, at 50 has embarked on an extraordinary journey, leaving behind a successful corporate career to embrace her love of DJing. Vandana, an MBA graduate from IIM Calcutta and a financial services professional with decades of experience, now spins tracks instead of presentations, proving it’s never too late to pursue one’s passion.

Born and raised in Kolkata, Vandana’s early life was defined by the usual toil—focused hard work, solid education and an impressive professional career. She built a stellar career, starting with Citibank in 1997, followed by stints in other well known multinationals in the US, Gurgaon, and Pune. Starting as a credit card business personnel and most recently heading operations for Bajaj Finserv Health Limited, her professional life was fulfilling but demanding.

By early 2023, Vandana decided to take a step back to focus on her family and personal aspirations and to reconnect with herself.

“I’ve always loved playing music,” she said. “Even during social gatherings, I would curate playlists that would make everyone dance. It was my way of bringing people together and taking the party to the next level.” After quitting her job in early 2023, she decided to get professional training to be a DJ. While she identified a professional DJ course at an academy, she didn’t get around to starting the course. Her family recognised this passion and gifted her a DJ console for her 50th birthday. Inspired, Vandana enrolled in the DJ training program right away, immersing herself in the endeavour of mixing music.

Her first public performance came during a Holi celebration at her housing complex. “I was nervous, but I thought, ‘If this music makes me want to dance, it will make others feel the same,’” she said. The overwhelming response from her audience gave her the confidence to keep going.

But Vandana’s journey wasn’t without challenges. In May, during a family trip, she suffered a wrist fracture, requiring surgery and months of recovery. “It set me back by a couple of months,” she admitted. “But it also gave me time to reflect and focus on what needed to be done to professionally scale my passion.”

By July, Vandana was back in action, performing at a private event – a milestone birthday party held at a premium resort near Lonavala. Her blend of Bollywood, retro, and international music struck a chord with diverse audiences. She has since had a lot of success as DJing for private parties, celebrations, and events, crafting playlists that make people of all ages hit the dance floor.

“I love how music connects people,” Vandana shared. “It’s not about fame or money for me. It’s about creating moments of joy and togetherness.”

For Vandana, her new path is about rediscovering herself and embracing a new chapter of life with courage and creativity.

“Being 50 doesn’t limit me; it empowers me. I’ve found joy and freedom in pursuing what I love, and I hope others are inspired to do the same,” she said.
