AFMC to chip in,contain AIDS spread

The Armed Forces Medical College Pune has decided to do its bit on the World AIDS Day. It will focus on containing the prevalence of HIV infection among the youth.

The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune has decided to do its bit on the World AIDS Day. It will focus on containing the prevalence of HIV infection among the youth.

Lt Gen D P Vats,Commandant of AFMC,said the incidence of HIV infection in the armed forces is on the decline as a result of intensive efforts.

AFMC Pune has played a key role in this success by providing technical expertise and guidance to the Armed Forces AIDS Control Organisation,which supervises such activities in the armed forces.

According to Col Atul Kotwal,officiating head of the department of community medicine,AFMC,on Wednesday said the college will conduct many events aimed at highlighting the success achieved in containing the prevalence of the disease in the armed forces by enhancing the general level of awareness.

Events such as poster making,slogan writing,role plays and quiz contests will be conducted to encourage participation by the wives of soldiers in control and prevention of HIV/AIDS. A special function is also being organised for soldiers and their families at AFMC Pune.

Elsewhere in the city,a huge rally will be taken out from the B J Medical College to Shaniwar Wada. Several youngsters are expected to participate,says Dr B Shende,district programme officer for AIDS.
