Padmini Kolhapure still has the honeyed voice we heard in films like Insaaf Ka Tarazu and Prem Rog or the album with Bappi Lahiri in the ’70s. The childlike chuckle in her tone belies her age and her actions still exude infectious enthusiasm. With her comeback in Bolo Raam, our hope is that she will continue to mesmerise us with her acting abilities, the way she did at the peak of her career.

“I hope I do,” she smiles, hoping her second innings will be as fruitful as her first one. “The industry seems to have remained the same except it is more fast-paced now and technically better placed. But it is more comfortable for me now. At that time I was part of the rat race,” says the actress, who after beginning her career at the age of seven, left it all at 22 to settle down with producer Tutu Sharma, after she had essayed some of the most powerful roles in Bollywood.

You may wonder why she chose to quit films after a meteoric rise at the peak of her career for the sake of family, but then why did she choose a rather low-profile comeback to the big screen. Kolhapure reasons,“I had prioritised my life when I quit acting. When I decided to act again I wanted everything at my pace. I am happy doing roles that are substantial and fulfilling, because at the end of the day I am an instinctive actor.”

With Bolo Raam,Kolhapure will join the gang of yesteryear actresses who now play roles with maternal overtones. “Bolo Raam defines the relationship between a mother and the son and it addresses the issue of a single parent. While it focuses on the beautiful relationship, the movie also spells out the ill effects of showering excess love on your children,” says the actress, who will be seen alongside Naseerudin Shah and Om Puri. “I have worked with them earlier and it is always nice reviving old ties,” says the versatile actress who often does plays to keep herself occupied.

Kolhapure was one of the few actresses who also had a flair for music. Hailing from a family of singers, the actress lent her voice for many popular songs. “But now I have completely stopped. One needs practice when singing,” she says. But what she is in touch with is the Padmini Kolhapure School of Acting, which she founded and opened various chapters across India, besides Model Shop, her academy in Mumbai that grooms models.
