Inspired by kids, 35-year-old mother sits for SSC exam

In a sea of teenage faces at the examination centre, Aarti stands out not just because of her age, but because of her determination to complete her education, proving that learning knows no age barrier.

“When I saw my children studying and preparing for their SSC exams, something stirred within me, “ said Aarti.

“I had to discontinue my studies due to financial issues and family circumstances and had to marry early. This forced me to leave school in the 9th grade. But watching my children’s dedication towards studies made me realize it’s never too late to chase one’s dreams.”

Divyani, now a first-year BA Psychology student, beams with pride when talking about her mother. “Mom has always been our strength, but now we have become her strength too. When she told us that she wanted to appear for the SSC exams and continue her education, we couldn’t have been happier. We studied together, and I helped her with Mathematics and Science,” she shares.

For Aarti, who is a homemaker, managing cooking, daily chores and studies has been challenging. “Initially, I felt awkward sitting among students who were my kid’s age. But my children’s support helped me overcome my hesitation,” Aarti said. “This has become possible because of my family’s backing, especially my husband, who took additional household responsibilities to support my educational pursuits.”

Divyani reveals that her mother’s determination has inspired others in their extended family. “Some of our relatives were surprised by Mom’s decision but they took inspiration from it. Now they also have shown interest to enrol in open schooling after seeing my mom study.”

Aarti’s story highlights how education transcends age barriers and how inspiration can flow both ways between parent and child. As Aarti prepares for her final papers, she is already thinking ahead. “After clearing SSC, I want to pursue higher studies, complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and become a language teacher,” said Aarti.
