A Touch of India

Indian textiles have been the toast of the fashion industry for a while now. In fact,most of the known names of Indian fashion have worked extensively with handwoven fabrics; right from veterans Ritu Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh to the recent favourites Nikasha Tawadey,Rahul Mishra and Anand Kabra. To celebrate this love,Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) will dedicate an entire day to Indian textiles.

Slated to take place from March 1-6 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai,LFW’s next edition will have the Indian Textile Day as one of its highlights. The day will see participating designers showcase their works in Khadi,jute,Chanderi,Mashru and Kota,among other Indian handwovens. While the list of the designers is yet to be announced,Sabyasachi has been confirmed as one of the participants and Krishna Mehta has been chosen to curate the day.

Anjana Sharma,Director – Fashion,IMG Reliance,says that Mehta’s consistent work in showcasing and promoting India’s art and craft made her the choice as the day’s curator. “Krishna has also started a unit that trains and employs specially abled people in hand-printing,dyeing and embroidery to make them financially independent. So when she approached us to be a part of the Indian Textiles Day,we were happy to have her curate this special event,” points out Sharma.
