A soulful tune

The Lions Club of Poona Kirkee Foundation and the Vijay Laxman Kudale Foundation recently felicitated city-based ghazal singer Pamela Singh along with other stalwarts from various fields. Singh, who has performed in several countries,is glad that ghazals have a large fan following abroad. The reach of this genre of music makes her smile. “I usually get my lyrics from poets but was awestruck when I sang a piece at a show in Ahmedabad, and later realised that it was written by an autorickshaw driver!” she says. She subtly plays with her list of songs when performing in front of foreign audiences and is particular about Urdu when performing in Pakistan and the Middle East. “Songs are good to listen to but a lot also depends on how the singer performs,” says Singh for whom the bankdrop of the dtage and even her attire during a performance are important factors. With a host of singing reality shows taking the country by storm,Singh feels they are more like “one-month fame” affairs. “But,they make for a good platform for young talent. I wish we had such talent hunts during our times,” she says.
