A Promise Fulfilled

Intimate ambiance and food that evokes superlatives defines this new European restaurant in Kalyani Nagar

Turning into one of the bylanes of Kalyani Nagar in search of Trois, the new European restaurant in the city,we knew dinner was going to be a quiet and intimate affair. The seating on the lower floor is indoors and facing the bar. The dark wooden furniture gleams in the muted orange light that the rooms bathe in. Cosy and warm,we think. But the cool, beautiful monsoon evening invited us upstairs to the open air deck. The only light came from the flickering candles placed in frosted bottles on the tables and the only sound was that of rain drops pitter-pattering on the streets below — it doesn’t get more intimate than this.

We began with the Mezze Platter and Pork Belly for starters, and asked for Red Sangria for accompaniment. But before any of our orders came,a server placed the bread basket before us. Warm and soft, the bread was the first sign of promise. The Mezze Platter followed, with an amazingly fresh and juicy Baba Ganoush. The brinjal was smooth, the onions crunching with a watery burst. The sangria was perfect for the evening, with full body of red wine, and the fruitiness and zest from the submerged fruits. It was turning out to be a great evening.

And then came the Pork belly. It had everything you could think to ask of pork — juiciness, grease and a beautiful salty, meaty flavour. Inside there was another surprise — scallops,in all their juicy glory. The only complaint one can possibly have with this dish is the woefully small portion. While the Mezze platter had enough to be shared by three, the Pork belly won’t go beyond a couple of bites.

For the mains,we asked for the Eye Fillet (beef),and Lamb Shoulder. The Eye Fillet was fascinating, even intimidating to look at. It comes as a huge hunk of beef sitting on herbed potatoes and peppercorn. The slow cooked Lamb Shoulder comes in pre-cut slivers, infused with rich savoury flavours from red wine. It was so tender,it actually melted in the mouth.

What could top such a sublime meal? Only a dessert like the Berry Crumble Tart. The tart comes dipped in golden buttery crumble, with a ring of pink-purple berry compote around it. The outer pastry tasted like warm Shrewsbury biscuit and breaks neatly, with very little pressure. On the side sat little dollops of cream and berry compote, which can be used as a dip,or just be enjoyed on their own. A lovely summer dessert.

Trois is one from the rare breed of restaurants that don’t scream out their food, but quietly serve one winner after another. We’re definitely going again.
