79 nabbed for drunk driving

In a special drive conducted at 20 different places in the city,the traffic police apprehended 79 people,including an orthopaedic surgeon,a few software engineers,senior employees of top corporate companies and also a serving army officer,who were driving under the influence of alcohol.

The traffic police have registered cases against them under Section 185 and 184 of Motor Vehicle Act. The drive was conducted in the wake of road mishap on June 16,when angry mob roughed up Shivraj Mhetre (22),son of senior Congress leader and former minister Siddharam Mhetre,after a speeding car driven by his friends mowed down a 65-year-old woman on the Pashan Sus Road,around 6 am on June 16. Police had arrested Unmesh Chavan (23) .

In a press release issued on Monday,Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil said the drive started at 10 pm on Saturday and was carried out till 1 am Sunday. The drive was mainly against people driving four-wheelers under the influence of liquor.
