Over a year after the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) communicated to the state government regarding making them an ‘entrepreneur’ for the ring road around Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to divert heavy traffic to the outskirts, the proposal is still pending with the government.

Even as Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar have repeatedly spoken of pushing for the project,no progress has been made. Senior officials of the mantralaya said the file was pending before the chief minister.

MSRDC officials said they had sent the proposal on September 5,last year, however, they had not received a response, even as several meetings had been conducted.

“We have been urging them to declare us as an entrepreneur to carry out the project. However,we have not got anything in writing from the state government,’’ said a senior MSRDC official.

MSRDC had proposed a 161.73-km ring road for Rs 10,408 crore. The project was proposed by the Public Works Department, and MSRDC was assigned the task to construct the ring road, which will cover Pune,Pimpri-Chinchwad and other areas in the Pune region. The road will take care of all the outbound traffic.

The total cost of Rs 10,408 crore includes construction cost of Rs 7,560 crore and land acquisition cost of Rs 2,848 crore. The six-lane road will have two service lanes,a 7.5-km elevated road and a 12-km tunnel.

The road will connect parts of Pune,Pimpri-Chinchwad,Kesnand,Lonikand,Tulapur,Murkal,Alandi,Dehu,Kiwale,Wakad,Baner,Pashan,Chandni chowk,Katraj,Undri Pisoli,Holkarwadi and Wadki.

“The proposed road will take care of traffic towards Solapur,Ahmednagar,Nashik and other outbound traffic, while the cost of the road could be recovered by using additional floor-space index (FSI) and this should also ensure that we have a toll-free system for the vehicles,” said senior MSRDC officials.

Four-phase project

The ring road was proposed on June 12,2007,to avoid congestion. The project is to be completed in four phases. Phase 1 on NH-9,which includes Kesnand-Charoli-Bhavdi-Tulapur-Alandi-Kalegaon-Chimbli (NH-50),while Phase 2 will include Chimbli on NH-50-Moee-Nighoje-Sangurde-Shelarwadi-NH4-Shirgaon-Chandkhed-Pachne-Pimpoli-Rihe-Ghotawde-Pirangut. Phase 3 will be Pirangut-Urwade-Mutha Bhuli-Sangrun-Nigde-Khamgaon-Ghera-Sinhagad-Kalyan-Kondanpur-Sriramnagar-NH-4 and Phase 4 will include Gogalwadi-Patharwadi-Bhivri-Kanifnath-Theur Phata (NH-9). Apart from this, there will be service lanes on both sides,12 flyovers, four rail bridges, seven bridges,14 subway road and 13 tunnels.
