In a shocking incident,a 12-year-old history-sheeter and two other minors were arrested on Wednesday for gangraping a four-year-old girl at Ramtekdi on October 14. The boys later tried to kill her but she survived and is undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital.

The youths claim to have committed the crime to gain fame in the crime world. All the three sported a similar haircut to show they belonged to the same gang.

The 12-year-old boy,who is the prime accused in the case,is addicted to inhaling whitener. He admitted to using up to four whitener bottles every day, police said. He was arrested on Wednesday along with his mother in connection with a chain-snatching case that took place on October 18. The boy confessed to the rape case during interrogation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone IV) Jalinder Supekar said the boy was on police record for his involvement in vehicle theft and chain snatching cases. “Initially,we detained him as his involvement was confirmed in snatching a gold chain of one Smita Gaikwad near Vaiduwadi railway crossing. Investigation revealed that he gave the stolen chain to his mother Aruna Mahendra Shinde to sell off,” he said.

“We received a tip-off from our sources that the same boy was involved in the minor’s rape and attempt-to-murder case. During interrogation,he confessed that he and his two minor friends — aged 16 and 17 years — took the child to Ramtekdi hill late in the evening on October 14. They raped her and tried to kill her by stoning her face,” he said.

“All three boys hail from poor families in Ramtekdi. Besides committing crimes, they are also addicted to inhaling whitener. They are school drop-outs,” said inspector Shivajirao Kanse.

According to the child’s father, she had gone out for buying crackers around 10 pm on October 14. Richard lodged a missing report when she did not return. She was found in an injured state behind the blind school in Ramtekdi around 6.30 am the next day.
