Acting on a tip-off,the Mumbai Police crime branch on Monday arrested a youth on charges of illegal possession of firearms. The police said that they have seized three firearms and 150 live rounds from him.
According to the police,Rahul Niranjan Bharadwaj alias Sharma (21) hails from Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh. Bharadwaj is a class 10 dropout and his father is a forest guard in Mandsaur,said police.
At 11:30 am on Monday,unit 2 of the crime branch received an information that somebody would be coming to Selection stationery shop at Jeevraj Mehta Chowk for selling weapons. Accordingly,we laid a trap at the spot and arrested Bharadwaj, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
The police seized two 0.35 bore factory-made revolvers and a 0.35 bore factory-made pistol from Bharadwaj. Thirty five rounds of 0.32 bore,45 rounds of 9mm bore,23 rounds of 7.62 bore and 47 rounds of assorted bores have also been seized from him. He has been booked under the Arms Act for illegal possession of firearms.
He was planning to sell the weapons to a few gangs of robbers in the city for Rs1.8 lakh. We will interrogate him to ascertain how many times he had come to the city to sell weapons before this and where does he get these weapons from, said Maria.
