With 10,157 votes, banker Meera Sanyal, whose high-profile campaign focused on putting Mumbai back on track after the 26/11 terror attack, finished a distant fifth in Mumbai South while Dr Mona Shah (4,361 votes) of Professionals Party of India came sixth.

Polling just a fraction of the total 6,41,571 votes, the wave of support some had predicted for the fresh faces in the aftermath of the terror attack was clearly not there.

“We had expected the results, but this is just the beginning,” said Sanyal’s spokesperson, adding that Sanyal was not in the least discouraged. “She raised the debate for city and if it hadn’t been for her,it would have been an issueless election. She had no machinery, money or muscle power but managed to get the votes in five weeks of campaigning.”

Sanyal’s campaign team had predicted that she would be a close third, following the two sitting Members of Parliament Milind Deora (Congress) and Mohan Rawle (Shiv Sena). Her campaign had focused on clean politics, hoping to cash in on the anger against politicians across parties.

Both Sanyal and Shah, however, fared better than SP’s Sayed Ather Ali (3,670 votes).
