Police said prima facie it appears that she was throttled to death.
“Prima facie, the woman was strangled to death and the body was stuffed in a suitcase for disposal at the creek,” Shil-Daighar police station senior inspector Shriram Pol said. A case of murder has been registered, he added.
The officer said no identification marks were found as the body was highly decomposed. Police suspect the suitcase had been dumped there at least 48 hours earlier.
“Efforts are underway to establish the identity of the woman. Missing person cases in Thane, Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli and CCTV footage from Palava and other areas are being checked,” officials said.
