Police are trying to ascertain the identity of a woman whose body was found inside a metal box near a mall in Goregaon on Friday night. Goregaon East police inquiring into the case said the driver of a garbage van, which had broken down near Hub Mall in Goregaon around 9:30 pm on Friday, noticed the box. The driver was about to move on after the vehicle was repaired, when he saw the box covered by cloth on the roadside at the spot where a bridge is under construction. He went to investigate and opened the lid. A hand sprang out as the lid had been closed tightly on the bunched up body. The scared driver fled leaving the van behind. The next day,he informed his superior who called police control room, said an officer with the Goregaon (E) police station.
Police reached the spot and found the body of the woman,in her 30s.
The deceased was in a saree. She seems to have died some 48 hours back, from the level of decomposition. There are no injury marks. She might have been strangled to death but we are awaiting post-mortem reports before arriving at a conclusion, said the officer.
Based on her attire and appearance, police suspect her to be a south Indian labourer. No clues have been found to ascertain her identity.
