(Express File Photo)A 37-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the 29th floor of a highrise in Navi Mumbai’s Panvel area after pushing her eight-year-old daughter to death, police said Friday.
The police said that the incident took place on March 13 morning at a residential building in Marathon Nexon at Palaspe in Panvel.
According to police, the woman identified as Maithili Dua locked herself in the room with her daughter Myra at around 8.30am on Wednesday.
“As soon as she locked herself and daughter in the bedroom, her husband Ashish claimed that he kept banging on the door while he heard that his minor daughter kept asking Maithali to open the door,” said an officer probing the matter.
The woman then allegedly threw her daughter off the balcony of their house and subsequently jumped, police said.
“When the woman’s husband looked down the window from another room, he saw their ailing bodies lying on the ground,” an officer added.
Later when the locals gathered at the spot, the police were informed and the two ailing persons were taken to a government hospital where they were declared dead before admission and their postmortem were conducted.
“Ashish was shocked after the incident due to which we could not record his statement immediately. However later he informed us that Maithali was under mental distressed and was receiving treatment,” an officer said.
The Panvel city police then registered a case of murder against Maithali on her husband’s complaint and an accidental death report regarding her suicide.
However, Maithali’s family members on Friday told police that the incident took place due to the harassment caused by Ashish.
Senior police inspector Nitin Thakre of Panvel City police station said, “The family members have raised allegations that Maithali was harassed by Ashish due to which she was under mental distress and took the extreme step. We have been informed that they will be coming to the police station after which their statements will be recorded and a future course of action will be decided.”
The police said that the couple got married about 13 years ago and have been staying in a high rise in Panvel since sometime. While Maithali was from Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) in Maharashtra and a homemaker, Ashish, who is from Agra, is a civil contractor.
