A special CBI court Thursday sentenced a senior official of Western Railway to four years in jail for demanding a bribe of Rs 3 lakh for awarding contracts to a firm.

Kishanlal Meena was found guilty under charges including Prevention of Corruption Act and directed to pay a fine of Rs 30,000.

According to submissions made by special public prosecutor, PKB Gaikwad, Meena was a senior divisional electrical engineer with Western Railway in 2015. He had sought Rs 3 lakh to give a contract to a firm.

A proprietor of the firm had said in his complaint that Meena had demanded the money by writing it on a chit, showing it to them and tearing off the paper after. The CBI set up a trap after receiving the complaint. Meena was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 1 lakh as bribe money.

Meena’s lawyer had said that he was falsely implicated and claimed there were irregularities in the evidence.

The CBI claimed that the bribe was being sought to give a third contract to the firm and for two previous contracts.
Meena had argued that if two of the contracts were already given, the CBI cannot claim that bribe was being sought for them.

“The dishonest intention and abuse of official position to grab money as gratification is alarming. The corruption by public servant has become a gigantic problem. It has deep and pervasive impact on the functioning of the entire country,” the special court said.
