Mumbai experiences a brief cool spell with temperatures dipping to 16.9°C. (Source: File Photo)Ushering in some respite for the city languishing under above normal daytime temperatures this month, the minimum temperatures dipped below normal to 16.9 degrees on Wednesday morning. Daytime temperatures also touched to 31.8 degrees on Wednesday, marking a drop of nearly three degrees in two days.
However, the city’s cool spell is likely to be short-lived amid the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting spike in temperatures over the weekend.
On Wednesday, data furnished by the IMD showed that while the Santacruz station logged 31.8 degrees celsius, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 29 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees Celsius below the normal. This came along the heels of the city waking up to a cool morning at 16.9 degrees on Wednesday morning.
Weather experts have attributed the dip to the northerly winds. Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services told The Indian Express, “Currently, temperatures in Delhi NCR, Rajasthan and other northern parts have dipped.
With the cool winds from the north blowing in, the temperatures have dipped slightly. However, this is likely to be a short spell. After two days, there is a western disturbance, owing to which, the city will again start receiving south westerly winds from the Arabian Sea. This will lead to a spike in temperatures.”
In its forecast bulletin, the weather bureau has forecast that the maximum temperatures will hover around 31 degrees until February 1, following which the day time temperatures will yet again soar to 33 degrees from February 2.
IMD has also forecast ‘generally cloudy skies’ for the city between February 2 and 3.
