View-cutters installed

Two months after the road overbridge at Milan subway was thrown open to the public,Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has started installing view-cutters on it after police cited security concerns.

A 150-metre stretch on the overbridge provides a direct view of the runway of the Santacruz domestic airport. Several motorists stop to click pictures at the spot.

The overbridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on May 25.

Police soon wrote to MMRDA saying a part of the overbridge has become a tourist spot as it offers a clear view of the airport and thus poses a security threat. MMRDA started installing view-cutters last week.

MMRDA’s chief engineer Sharad Sabnis said the work will be completed in the next 15 days and is likely to cost about

Rs 15 lakh.

“The view-cutters will block the view completely. It will also prevent congestion on the bridge since people will no longer stop,” said Sabnis.

MMRDA had also installed view-cutters on the recently-commissioned Eastern Freeway, which oversees a number of oil installations.

An official from the CM’s office revealed that such caution was not exercised while building the Milan road overbridge.

The project itself had faced a delay of many years and had missed its deadline over five times.
