Two days after the Trombay police started interrogating the five arrested accused in the gangrape case police say they are in a state of mental trauma and are repenting their act. The police say the accused had given similar versions on how the incident transpired.

The accused are not hardened criminals. They are co-operating in the investigation. They are aware that their studies and their future have been put at stake because of the case. All the accused have given their versions and we found that they corroborate with one other, said Deputy Commissioner of Police,Zone VI,Dilip Sawant.

The police also said that they are making efforts to keep them away from media glare,as they dont want over-exposure to hamper the case. Identifying witnesses and persuading them to give their statements is a hard task and many people are hesitant to come forward as they feel that helping the police would mean incessant visits to the police station. In this case,our most crucial witnesses are the auto-rickshaw drivers who ferried the accused and the victim to the Andheri flat. We dont want them to shy away from the case after being tracked by the media, said a Trombay police official.

The police have also requested TISS to contact the victims friend who was with her and the accused at Cafe XO but had not accompanied them to the Andheri flat. She had left for Darjeeling the day after the incident and is yet to return. We have requested the institute to inform her about the case as well as the importance of her statement as a witness. She is expected to be back soon and we will be recording her statement, said Sawant.
