In late September, an email sent out by mess council of hostel 12, 13 and 14 of IIT Bombay, which informed students about designated veg-only space in their combined mess, had sparked a major controversy. (File) Months after the controversy over veg-only tables on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the institute has stated that there is no separate space for vegetarians in any of its hostels. This reply came as an RTI response on questions related to food segregation.
Documents of this RTI reply are shared publicly on X (formerly Twitter) by the Ambedkar Phule Periyar Study Circle (APPSC), an informal students’ collective on the campus. It also denies imposition of any penalty or punishment on any individual eating non-vegetarian food in vegetarian spaces.
The APPSC posted, “IIT admin is openly lying that there is no segregation in hostel messes, and no fines were imposed. This after they imposed a hefty fine of Rs 10,000 on a student.”
In late September, an email sent out by mess council of hostel 12, 13 and 14 of IIT Bombay, which informed students about designated veg-only space in their combined mess, had sparked a major controversy. While the mess council designated six tables where only veg-food can be taken by anyone, few students protested the decision by eating non-veg food on the same tables. A fine was imposed on one of the identified students.
