‘Uploader’ Army officer gets bail

Lieutenant Colonel Jagmohan Balbir Singh,42,charged with online child pornography, was released on Wednesday, with the metropolitan magistrate’s court granting him bail against a surety of Rs 25,000.

Lieutenant Colonel Jagmohan Balbir Singh,42,charged with online child pornography, was released on Wednesday, with the metropolitan magistrate’s court granting him bail against a surety of Rs 25,000.

Singh, who was in a lock-up at the police headquarters in Crawford Market, had been arrested for allegedly downloading and uploading pornographic pictures and clips of children.

The Crime Branch’s cyber crime investigation cell had sought further custody. “We are trying to find out if Singh has had any bank transaction with his foreign accomplices. He hasn’t given us any details of the source from where he downloaded the pornographic material,” Mukund Pawar, senior police inspector investigating the case, told the court.

The court, however, observed that sufficient custody had already been granted.

Singh’s lawyers, who had moved a bail application last Saturday, argued that all the incriminating material was already with the police. “Police have seized his computer and sent the hard disk to the forensic laboratory,” said advocate Dilip Bagwe.

He said Singh could not afford to jump bail as he was a serving Army officer and that would lead to a court-martial. “Since his arrest he has maintained he would cooperate in the investigation,” added Bagwe.

Singh will have to visit the Crime Branch twice a week.
