After a video that purportedly showed Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve kissing party spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre in Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s presence went viral online, police on Sunday arrested two men for allegedly morphing the video from a political rally.
Mhatre, on whose complaint the Dahisar police arrested the duo, said the video had been morphed to defame her and hinted that workers of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena UBT had circulated the video online.

“If there is nothing to say about a woman in politics, then attempt her character assassination? Is this the culture of the Uddhvast (Uddhav Thackeray) faction? Didn’t you remember Balasaheb’s manners while uploading such a morphed video about a woman from a Facebook page called Matoshree? Everyone knows who those people are who made the video viral. Can opponents stoop so low? In Shivaji Maharaj’s Maharashtra, can a woman be defamed in this way? We have a clear idea who is behind this and who is doing it,” Mhatre tweeted.
The video purportedly shows both Surve and Mhatre along with the chief minister and others atop a vehicle during a political rally.
Police identified the duo as Ashok Mishra and Manas Kunwar. They were booked under sections 354 (molestation), 509 (outraging modesty), 500(defamation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
