(File photo)Gadchiroli police have arrested the driver of the truck that mowed down four schoolchildren and injured two more on the Armori-Gadchiroli highway last Thursday.
Police relied on eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Nagpur, to identify and locate the truck, which was seized from Chhattisgarh.
The driver Pravin Balkrishna Kolhe (26) and assistant driver Sunil Sriram Margaye (47), both from Chichgad in Gondia district, have been arrested. Both will be presented before the court.
Six schoolchildren from Katli village in Gadchiroli district were on a morning walk on the Katli to Nagri Fata stretch of the highway. Around 5 am, the truck traveling from Gadchiroli towards Armori ploughed into the children.
Two of them died on the spot. Two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at the District General Hospital in Gadchiroli. The other two injured children, aged 13 and 14, were airlifted to a private hospital in Nagpur, where they underwent surgery. Their condition is currently stable.
A case was registered against the unknown driver at the Gadchiroli police station. Gadchiroli SP Neelotpal formed five separate investigation teams to track down the accused.
