Top juniors for Thakkar Memorial

Gautam Thakkar,at one time India’s leading junior player and only Junior Asian Champion,left unforgettable memories of his playing days,and later on as a tremendous human being. One can never forget the ever-smiling visage of the dashing and debonair Gautam Thakkar,just as one can never forget his incredible performances on the badminton court as a player,who was a class apart.

The sport of badminton in India gained tremendously from Gautam Thakkar and he,in turn,remained loyal to the sport till his physical capabilities permitted,never missing his daily date with badminton on the courts of Bombay Gymkhana.

To further strengthen Gautam Thakkar’s legacy to the sport of badminton,a group of like minded individuals have come together to form the Gautam Thakkar Memorial Badminton Association and their first offering is the Rs 10 lakh prize money Gautam Thakkar Memorial Junior Masters Badminton Tournament,to be hosted by the Bombay Gymkhana from December 10-13.

This was announced by Khalid A H Ansari,President Gautam Thakkar Memorial Badminton Association,in the presence of Uday Pawar (Organising Secretary),and Raj Bajaj,President,Bombay Gymkhana at a press conference held at the Bombay Gymkhana on Wednesday.

All the top junior boys and girls in the country,including Rohit Yadav,Pratul Joshi,Gauri Ghate and Tanvi Lad,besides Ruthvika Shivani (Silver medalist in the Asian Badminton Youth Championships),Aditya Joshi & Harshil Dani (Silver medalists in the Russian Junior International),to name a few,will take part in this prestigious tournament.

The tournament will be played on a League-cum-Knock out basis for the first time in India. The top 12 singles players and top six doubles pairs (Boys and Girls) in the U-17 & U-19 age groups,as per the National Rankings,will vie for the top honors in this event. The under-19 singles winners will get Rs 60,000 each,while the Under-17 singles winners will take home Rs 40,000 each. The doubles winners in the Under-19 and Under-17 winners will earn Rs 65,000 and Rs 45,000 respectively.
