Navi Mumbai police have booked Hindutva activist Sambhaji Bhide for his alleged belittling remarks on Gautam Buddha and other social reformers. This is the third FIR lodged in the span of a week by police against the Hindutva leader.

Panvel resident advocate Amit Katarnavre on Sunday recorded his statement with the police and filed an FIR. As per the complaint at New Panvel police station, he said he had seen some YouTube videos in which Bhide made the slanderous remarks.

In these videos, Bhide has allegedly made demeaning remarks against social reformers Jyotiba Phule, Periyar Naicker and Gautam Buddha, which hurt sentiments of those who follow their ideologies, the complainant advocate said.

Katarnavre said that Bhide allegedly told people to kill Muslims with weapons like the ‘koyta’ to prevent incidents of ‘love jihad’. In the FIR, the advocate also submitted links of eight YouTube videos in which Bhide is allegedly seen making the comments.

Based on his complaint, the police on Sunday, registered an FIR against Bhide under Indian Penal Code Sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc), 153-B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) and 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and sections 3(1)(v), 3(1)(r), 3(1)(u), 3(2)(va) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the police said.

On August 1, an FIR was registered against Bhide in Nashik city for his alleged derogatory remarks on Shirdi Saibaba and Phule. Before that in the last week of July, an FIR was filed against him in Amravati for his alleged offensive remarks about Mahatma Gandhi’s lineage at a gathering in Bharat Mangal Hall in Amravati during his Vidarbha tour.
