The Mellow Fellows

Ever since Duncun Rufus released their first album late last year, the word most often used to describe their music has been ‘soulful’. On the 10 tracks on the album Carte Blanche you’ll hear Lima Yanger’s melodious crooning accompanied by soft drumming and a whole lot of guitars. The songs talk about hope, betrayal, desire and devotion. This year, they will tour extensively in support of Carte Blanche, and among the gigs lined up is one at Live from the Console at Mehboob Studio,Bandra, this Saturday. Besides,2012 will also see the launch of their second album,The Folds Galore.

The band came together between 2009 and 2010, the latter being when they started jamming together. “In 2010,I locked myself for a month and ended up writing about 15 songs,of which seven made it to the album,” says vocalist/guitarist Lima Yanger. The result is an album full of original, mellow music. “The emphasis was on writing songs rather than composing technique-laden pieces,” he says.

Incidentally, all five musicians in the band are well-known on the Indian music circuit, each having been a part of at least one band previously. Yanger (of the Mumbai bands Bliss Logic and Sleeping Buddha),on drums Gaute Johannesen (of the Norwegian band Popface),on bass Thirumalai (of KK,Ashu and Bliss Logic),on lead guitars Hitesh Dhutia (of Junkt,Sleeping Buddha,Contraband and Rajiv Raja Combine) and on guitars Vinay Lobo (of Airport,The Vinyls and Nikhil D’souza).
