3 dead, 3 injured as car with drunk driver rams into other vehicles in Thane’s Ulhasnagar

Thane police officers said they are awaiting blood reports to confirm if the accused was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Thane police arrested a man who rammed his SUV into two autorickshaws and another four-wheeler resulting in the death of three people and injuries to three others in Ulhasnagar early Monday.

According to the police, they are awaiting blood reports to confirm if the accused Lavesh Kewalramani, 22, was driving his MG Hector under the influence of alcohol after residents alleged alcohol bottles were recovered from his vehicle.

The accident took place around 5.30 am on Monday when Kewalramani was returning to his Ulhasnagar residence from a wedding in Kalyan. While on the Kalyan Ambernath Road near the Raymond showroom, Kewalramani lost control and hit two autorickshaws and a car, said the police.

Six people sustained injuries and three of them died due to the injuries they sustained. The deceased include two West Bengal residents, Somudeep Jana and Anjali Jana. The third deceased was identified as autorickshaw driver Shambhu Chavan.

The three others are currently recuperating in a hospital.

A police officer said soon after the accident residents called up them following which a team from the local police station registered an FIR and arrested the accused.

Kewalramani was produced before a local court, which remanded him to police custody.
