The issue of temporary employees working in sensitive departments of Mumbai University (MU) has once again come to light after three such workers, among others, were arrested by the Mumbai Police for their involvement in the paper leak case.
Paresh Tendulkar,Vikas Ujjainwal and Bharat Singh were contract employees working on temporary basis. Singh was posted in the manuscript department a sensitive section of the examination department.
Currently, there are around 400 employees working on temporary basis at the exam house of MU on Kalina campus. Of these, around 200 are posted at CAP centres, where evaluation of answer papers is done and remaining 200 are posted at other sections such as manuscripts, printing and dispatch.
The exam section of the university is not being handled systematically. The series of paper leaks just points out at the level of mismanagement. It was shocking to learn that staff employed on temporary basis are posted at sensitive sections like manuscripts, printing and delivery, said Dr A D Sawant, former pro-vice chancellor of MU.
The issue of temporary employees was taken up with the varsity authorities a number of times, but nothing concrete has been done. We are now planning to write to the Governor to intervene and resolve the issue, said a senior faculty member of MU.
In June 2011,two temporary employees,Suresh Bhujbal and Ranasingh Girase, were caught allegedly stealing eight answersheets from the examination house at Kalina campus. They were handed over to the police by security guards.
Dr Rajan Welukar,Vice-Chancellor of MU,said,Temporary employees are appointed only for seasonal works. All the important work in every department of the university is assigned only to the experienced and regular staff working on permanent basis. We are still re-looking at the policy of recruiting temporary employees.
