Teen among 5 killed as bus rams into truck it was overtaking in Nashik district

The bus started from Vasai depot and was heading towards Nashik city when the driver of the state transport bus, Shailesh Suryavanshi, tried to overtake the truck and instead ended up ramming into it.

Five persons including a 14-year-old boy died after a state-run bus collided with a truck on Mumbai-Agra highway in Nashik district early on Tuesday. The police said nearly 50 passengers were on board when the incident took place, following which 34 of them were rushed to the hospital and five were declared dead during treatment.

According to police officials, the incident took place at around 9.15 am. The bus started from Vasai depot and was heading towards Nashik city when the driver of the state transport bus, Shailesh Suryavanshi, tried to overtake the truck and instead ended up ramming into it.

Senior police inspector Kailash Wagh of Chandwad police station said, “We have learnt the bus was overcrowded with many standee passengers. When Suryavanshi suddenly began speeding to overtake the truck, he misjudged the space between the truck and the divider and ended up ramming the left side of the bus into the truck.”

Police said the accident took place near Chandwad following which passengers were rushed to the hospital. The police said around 34 passengers had sustained severe injuries of which five persons— Vinod Shinde (38), Suresh Sawant (28), Sai Deve (14), Baderam Ahire (64) and Khaleeda Hussain (60) —succumbed to their injuries. Vinod Shinde, the conductor of the bus took a hit as he was standing on the left side in the front of the bus

The remaining 29 passengers are recuperating in government and private hospitals in Nashik and nearby districts.

“Suryavanshi, with minor injuries, has been shifted to a private hospital by the corporation,” Wagh said.

Officials from Chandwad police station further said that they are in process of registering a case of rash and negligent driving against the ST bus driver.

“We have recorded statements of passengers and it appears that Suryavanshi’s lapse of judgement caused the accident. We are in the process of registering a case against him. The formalities will be completed by midnight and we will arrest Suryavanshi as soon as he is discharged from hospital,” an officer said.
