(File Photo)Several flight services at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were disrupted on Friday after a technical glitch at New Delhi’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) rippled across India, affecting at least 300 flight operations.
The issue began early on Friday when a technical glitch in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) disrupted air traffic control data at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and impacted traffic movement across north India. With the issue remaining unsolved for several hours, the glitch and delay in flight services had a cascading effect across the country including Mumbai.
Sources from Mumbai Airport said that the disruptions at Delhi had impacted arrivals at Mumbai airport. Spokesperson from several airline services confirmed that their flight services were delayed.
Amid the hit, the Mumbai airport issued an advisory on Friday evening announcing that flight operations at Mumbai Airport had been affected by a technical issue impacting the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) at Delhi, which supports Air Traffic Control flight planning. “The concerned authorities are actively working to resolve the issue at the earliest. As a result, airline operations may experience delays. Passengers are advised to connect with their respective airlines for updates on flight status and revised schedules. We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and cooperation,” said that statement.
However, minutes later the statement was redacted by the authorities stating that it was internal advisory which was published publicly owing to an error.
Even so, sources confirmed that disruptions of flight services and the bunching of flights had impacted services across airports including Mumbai wherein arrivals were hit. “Flights move in multiple sectors. So when a flight coming in from Delhi is delayed, it is bound to have a cascading effect and impact operations everywhere. Owing to the impact in Delhi, the arrivals were delayed in Mumbai as well but they were managed. Owing to flight rotations and redirections, the impact was controlled in Mumbai,” a source privy to the developments told The Indian Express.
