Techie kidnap bid case: Cops release three men detained for questioning

The witness, a 22 year old man, was walking down the road when he saw Lad jump out of a moving autorickshaw.

The Kapurbawdi police  in Thane on Thursday released three men who were detained in connection with an alleged kidnapping attempt on software engineer Swapnali Lad, 24, and for an attack on a witness who tried to help Lad following the attack last week.

Meanwhile, in a bid to trace the autorickshaw driver who attempted to kidnap the victim, Swapnali Lad, a techie working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Thane, the Thane police have approached various autorickshaw driver associations for assistance.

These associations have been asked to provide information on night-shift autorickshaw drivers so that they can be questioned for leads on the absconding driver.

According to police, the witness, a 22 year old man, was walking down the road when he saw Lad jump out of a moving autorickshaw.

At the same time, three bike-borne men reached the spot. The witness had informed the police that the trio roughed him up and threatened him while he was trying to help Lad.

The trio, however, had claimed during questioning that they were helping the witness carry Lad to the car of Usha Bhoir, wife of NCP corporator Sanjay Bhoir, who had stopped by to help. According to their claims, the witness was holding an umbrella that was poking Lad. One of the three men told the witness a little rudely to put away his umbrella if he wanted to help, which led to an argument that continued even after the car had left, said the police.

“We recorded the statement of three men whom we had suspected to be involved in connection with the abduction attempt and attack on a witness thereafter. They have been identified by Usha Bhoir and she also told us that these three men were actually helping the victim,” said Balasaheb Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 5, Thane.
