Classes for Class XII students in the new academic year and admission to Class XI,relieved only recently from the uncertainty of the proposed 90:10 quota, could be thrown into disarray from July 14 with college teachers threatening to cease work indefinitely.
The Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations (MFUCTO) is protesting the non-implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and the introduction of the National Eligibility Test (NET) and the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) as a necessary qualification for college teachers. Around 40,000 teachers from colleges and universities are expected to cease work.
MFUCTO,the apex body for college and university teachers organisations, has also called on teachers across the state to go on mass causal leave on July 6.
The recent decision to make NET and SLET compulsory will affect 10,000 teachers in the state.
All teachers who were appointed from September 1991 to July 4,2000 have been brought under the NET-SLET. However,at the time of their appointment,NET-SLET was not mandatory. This should not be compulsory for these teachers now; they should be given all benefits, said Prof C R Sadasivan, president of the Bombay University College Teachers Union (BUCTU).
The government has implemented the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations for all state employees but college teachers are yet to get their due,he said. This, despite the HRD Ministry directing the UGC to write to state governments and university vice chancellors to implement the recommendations immediately.
MFUCTO has also demanded a uniform leave package as recommended by the UGC,which includes longer maternity leave.
