Taking a Chance

Why did you choose this game show as your television debut?
I was offered a lot of different shows but I chose this because I loved its format. The best part was that it’s a fun and interactive show. I can’t and wouldn’t want to do anything serious so this was just perfect.

Winning this game needs a lot of luck. How does lady luck normally treat you?
As actors we deal with luck on a day-to-day basis. I’ve always been told that being an actor requires one per cent talent, one per cent hard work and 98 per cent luck. My parents are my lucky charm.

Being a host is very different from acting in a film. How did you prepare for this change?
I just jumped into it with eyes closed. This experience was very different because in a film you play a character. On the show, viewers will see your real personality. They will judge you accordingly and it’s an extremely scary thought. So,I didn’t try to pretend to be anyone else, but me.

Did your father give you any tips?
Yes,he’s my favourite television host ever so I did ask him for tips. He simply said,“Be yourself and make your guests feel comfortable”.

What was the best part of being a game show host?
Shooting in small cities where I got to interact with all my fans. We shot an episode in Udaipur in which all the participants were local people. It was probably the best episode we have shot till date. I just had so much fun. People from the film industry never actually get to meet their real fans. We don’t really realise the warmth and enthusiasm of the people out there.

Does AB Corp. have any plans to get into producing television shows?
As of now,we don’t have anything planned. We’re still busy with the post-release activity of Paa and our Marathi film Vihir. We don’t want to churn out 10 films a year. We want to be more like a boutique production house that does only one or two projects a year. This is not a business venture for me but a passion. So I will not take on too much too soon. I don’t want to be answerable to other people for their money.

You’re urging everyone to relax. How do you unwind?
I don’t want to relax anymore. It’s currently the time for me to get busy and let my family do all the relaxing now. As a son,I worry for my dad’s health. As a fan,I do want him to continue doing films but I really wish he would spend more time just chilling and taking extra care of his health.

Why did Sonya Jehan replace Aishwarya Rai in your next film,Crooked?
We have already started shooting for the film, whose working title is Crooked. Aishwarya wanted to be part of the film but the dates just didn’t match as she is really busy shooting for her Tamil film Endhiran.
