Top seed Siddharth Suchde bagged the men’s title, while Saumya Karki helped herself to a second straight double crown,in the 68th CCI-Western India Open Squash Tournament at the Cricket Club of India (CCI).

India No. 2 Suchde took 37 minutes to overcome his friend and training partner Harinderpal Singh Sandhu of Tamil Nadu 11-7,11-3,11-7 in a well-contested championship round. The final between the quality players was marked by long, exciting rallies that had their share of thrills. India No. 3 Sandhu, who had beaten Suchde in the Nationals at the CCI last year, made an effort to keep his hopes alive in the crucial third set in which he earned two strokes. He trailed 2-6 but came back brilliantly to narrow the margin to 5-6 with the strokes.

But two crucial nicks gave Suchde a 9-6 lead and though Sandhu unleased a brilliant nick at the end,Suchde held on to earn his maiden CCI-Western India title. “I’ve seen Harinder play better, but I think I was more consistent,” said Suchde. “Siddharth played very well. He attacked the loose shots and that gave him the edge,” reasoned Sandhu.

Defending champion Karki overcame arch-rival Urvashi Joshi of Jindal Squash Academy in the women’s and girls under-19 finals to complete a rewarding day. While Suchde and Karki took the honours among the seniors, top junior Veer Chotrani was the toast of the day when,as the boys under-11 No. 1 seed,he rallied from a 0-2 deficit to fashion a thrilling 8-11,9-11,11-8,11-5,11-9 victory over second seed Tushar Shahani in an all-Khar Gymkhana final.

In other tight matches, top seed Aryaman Adik of Otters Club endur ed a stiff challenge from Adithya Raghavan of Tamil Nadu before snatching a nail-biting 11-9,6-11,11-7,9-11,12-10 win for the boys under-13 title.

Second seed Aishwarya Bhattacharya of Bombay Gymkhana beat arch-rival and top seed Aishwarya Nambiar of Country Club 12-10,11-4,12-10 in an exciting girls’ under-15 final.
