Nearly 320 students of Chinai College,Andheri, vandalised college property on Monday afternoon after the management rusticated them citing poor attendance. The students had reached the college on Monday to give their viva-voce exam but were told they were on the list of defaulters as they did not have the mandatory 75 per cent attendance.
The students then staged a protest outside the college. Soon, workers from political parties and students organisations including the Aditya Thackeray-led Yuva Sena,Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and National Students Union of India ( NSUI ) arrived, and the protest allegedly turned violent with the mob pelting stones at the security guard. The protesting students then barged into the college and damaged college property.
How can all (320) the students be on defaulters list? This is one of their tactics to get us out of the college so they can shut it down and sell the property for commercial use, said a TYBCom student from the college. Also,45 students who are to take the TYBCom exam this year have not received their hall tickets yet.
For the past five years, the Laxmi Education Trust has been facing protests over its alleged move to shut down the two colleges MVLU and Chinai College in Andheri allegedly to commercially utilise the land. A year ago, they also sacked over 40 teachers in standard XI. Praveen Patkar, secretary of Yuva Sena, said,We will not let management close down the college at any cost. If necessary,we will take legal action against them.
Despite several attempts, trust secretary Hemant Vissanji could not be contacted. Meanwhile, few students and workers of political parties were detained at the Andheri (east) police station.
