State may see mid-term Assembly polls: Awhad

Opposition Nationalist Congress Party legislator Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday said there is a possibility of mid-term Assembly elections in the state looking at the manner in which the Supreme Court was giving orders to the Assembly Speaker.

“The court has been very clear and stern in its approach. It has directed the Speaker to give a timetable for the hearing. It is not only in the Shiv Sena case but also applicable for Nationalist Congress Party,” said Awhad, while speaking to the media.

Awhad added, “The manner in which case is progressing, it is possible that Maharashtra may witness mid-term polls.”

The NCP leader maintained that the court order is applicable even to the NCP’s application with Speaker Rahul Narwekar seeking disqualification of rebel NCP MLAs led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Pawar rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar on July 2 and joined hands with the BJP. Sharad Pawar-led NCP has since filed disqualification petitions against these MLAs which are pending with Narwekar.

On July 2, Ajit Pawar joined hands with the BJP causing a split in the NCP. The Sharad Pawar- led NCP has since filed disqualification petitions against MLAs who joined Ajit and the petitions are currently pending with Narwekar.
