Stars and style

For give me if I sound star-struck but when my friend Tarun Tahiliani mentioned that Bollywood hottie Akshay Kumar was going to be his showstopper for the Levi’s show,I knew I had to be there.

Delhi designers have learnt that when in Bombay,go to Bollywood

For give me if I sound star-struck but when my friend Tarun Tahiliani mentioned that Bollywood hottie Akshay Kumar was going to be his showstopper for the Levi’s show,I knew I had to be there. TT’s fabulously fun-frayed jeans were almost exciting, only until Akki came on stage, stood atop a platform and did a little sexy turn. Then he came on the ramp and kneeled in front of the shutterbugs,as if to show how beautifully his jeans stretch (and beautifully they did),before walking up to wife Twinkle,on the front row,and getting her to unbutton his denims. TT would’ve had a laugh had he seen the shenanigan; almost as loud as he did when he came for his bow to find Akki on top of the platform yet again,a fan billowing his ganji and exposing his navel. But like I tell him, when in Bombay,go to Bollywood.

After the show,I caught up with Mandira Wirk at the China House Lounge. Over a couple of espressos, the poor girl confessed she’s so busy preparing for her own show, she hasn’t had time to catch any of the others. That, and that Malaika Arora, who was to walk for her,has ditched her last minute. “But I love the buzz over here. Now that I know how things work in Mumbai,I’m very comfortable here,” she told me cheerfully.

Shah Rukh was fabulous on Manish Malhotra’s runway, sportingly walking with his arm in a sling. But at the after-party,did he have to segregate himself in a restricted area? Not good manners,Mr K.

I used to adore the Oriental work the Geisha designers used to do. They always stayed away from the throwaway qualities of fashion and came out with lovely timeless pieces, but Paras and Shalini seem to have given in to the red-carpet hype and sent out an endless array of long dresses with glittering necks (that too on an actual red-carpet). Lovely, but not as lovely as Geisha used to be.

Nachiket Barve delighted in his textures (as he always does) and trendy metallic colours, but his shapes were too simple.

And isn’t this year the year of the strong shape? Ah,well.

The best show I’ve seen this Week has been Nikasha Tawadey’s. After staying under her BFF Sabyasachi’s shadow for so long,Nikasha finally outshone him (indeed). A beautiful, romantic line of Indian embroideries in ivories and ecrus and a small splash of colour,Nikasha reworked the lehenga and the salwar kameez. This is what we mean when we say Indian clothes can be globally worn. As Wendell Rodricks, who stood up for her and clapped, said: “This stuff can be worn in Palma Majorca or Cote D’Azur.

”Very well done,girlfriend.

GOOD GOSS
The last to enter Manish’s party was Kareena Kapoor who greeted Kajol,Tanisha and Gauri but saw through her supposed ex-flame Hrithik Roshan and wife Suzanne.

QUICK QUIP
“I am growing, growing up and growing into a woman.”
JIAN KHAN,when asked why she chose to be showstopper for Sunaina Puri

IF YOU must BUY one thing this CASH CRUSH,MAKE IT…
The lycra shirt from Narendra Kumar’s Nari Nari line. For every guy who loves to party.

TASTY TREND
Greys and blacks are a nod to the downturn. From Sunaina Puri’s georgette pearl-embellished gowns to Sailex’s lace-and-net cocktail dresses, the two dull colours brightened the day.
