The BMC will soon implement the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations for all its employees,Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar said on Tuesday.

The 24-hour strike planned by civic unions was cancelled on Tuesday after the BMC assured them of clearing the arrears for the past three years in the next two weeks. “We wish to sign the agreement by the month-end and till then, the strike has been called off,” said Sharad Rao of Municipal Mazdoor Union.

The implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission is expected to benefit over 80,000 municipal workers and will cost the BMC over Rs 300 crore.

While the establishment cost of the civic body is about 67 per cent, the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission is expected to increase the cost further by at least 10 per cent, said civic officials. A BMC sub-committee will look into how much allowance should be sanctioned to the employees under the Sixth Pay Commission .

The implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission will also mean less leave for employees, while the working hours will be as per the Centre’s norms. “If we plan to implement it,working hours and leaves will also be adjusted accordingly,” said Kumar.
