Soon, a ‘deluxe’ restroom at Thane railway station

Commuters will be charged Re 1 for using the facility.

After many unsuccessful attempts to create a good toilet facility at suburban railway stations in Mumbai, the Central Railway (CR) is all set to begin a ‘deluxe-style’ restroom facility at Thane railway station in a month’s time.

With only a sewage connection now pending, CR is set to test the success of the model before providing such toilets at suburban railway stations.

“This is a new kind of a model being experimented for a toilet facility at suburban railway stations. The facility is almost ready. Depending on the success of the model, it can be replicated at other stations,” said a senior railway officer.

Unable to attract private players in sanitary business, like Sulabh International, to run deluxe toilets at railway stations, the CR engaged with advertising company Guju Ads to build and maintain a restroom facility at Thane railway station.

A five-year contract has been signed by CR and a joint venture of Guju Ads and USA International which allows the company to earn revenue from the advertising space at the facility.

With 28 urinals and 10 water closets and separate toilet for handicapped, the facility at platform 2 at Thane station is estimated to have been built for over Rs 40 lakh. Commuters will be charged Re 1 for using the facility.

The plan to have a deluxe restroom at Thane, Kalyan and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) has been in the pipeline since 2012.
