Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Maharashtra minister Babanrao Gholap on Thursday resigned from the primary membership of the party. While Gholap is yet to disclose plans about his future political journey, sources said he and his son Yogesh along with other local leaders will join Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

In a one-line letter to Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday, which he posted on X, the five-term MLA from the Deolali Assembly constituency of Nashik between 1990 and 2014 said he has resigned from the post of ‘Shiv Sainik’.

Recently, Gholap had claimed despite raising his apprehensions and complaints with party leadership, he did not get any response.

Before this, Gholap had resigned from the deputy leader post of the Sena UBT, but it was not accepted.

His latest move comes days after Gholap met Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Mumbai with the demands of the Rashtriya Charmakar Mahasangh which he heads. Gholap had claimed his demands were accepted by Shinde.

According to the party functionaries, Gholap had been upset for the past few months after he was removed as the Shiv Sena (UBT) liaison chief for the Shirdi Lok Sabha constituency and MLC Sunil Shinde was appointed in his place.

A source said Gholap was looking to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Shirdi parliamentary constituency. However, after Bhausaheb Wackchaure, the former MP from Shirdi, joined the Shiv Sena (UBT), the possibility of his candidature for the parliamentary constituency looked dim.
