Shiv Sena local leader stabbed to death in Thane’s Ulhasnagar, hunt on for attackers

The deceased has been identified as Shabbir Shaikh, believed to be in his 40s. He was recently named the Ulhasnagar city president of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena

Local residents rushed him to a hospital which in turn referred Shaikh to another hospital in Kalyan as his condition was critical. He died before he could be admitted to the second hospital, the police said.

A MAN, who allegedly operated a matka club, was brutally killed in Thane district’s Ulhasnagar on Friday night.

The victim, Shabbir Shaikh, in his 40s, was an office-bearer of the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He had recently been declared Sena’s Ulhasnagar city president.

The Thane police said Shaikh was attacked by more than one person. The police, who suspect old rivalry behind the killing, have launched a hunt for the accused.

On Friday night, at around 11.40 pm, Shaikh was attacked with knives and choppers at Jai Janata Colony in Ulhasnagar, the police said. The attackers had covered their faces with handkerchiefs. Shaikh was stabbed and slashed eight-10 times. He sustained injuries all over his body.

Locals rushed him to hospital, which referred him to another hospital in Kalyan. He died on the way. The police have identified the suspects from CCTV footage. Shaikh was booked by the Thane police some years ago for running a matka business.

Ranjeet Dere, senior inspector of Hill Line police station, Ulhasnagar, said the murder took place over some old enmity and there was no political angle to it. “We have registered a case under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) and others and have identified the suspects from CCTV footage. Efforts are on to nab them,” Dere said.
