Shinde targets Sena UBT, says Marathi manoos ‘pushed out of Mumbai’

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting at Mantralaya on the issue of 65 unauthorised buildings in the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal limits, Shinde accused the opposition of reviving the Marathi plank only because elections are approaching.

Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena UBT alleging that during its control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the party “did nothing” for the Marathi community and allowed the Marathi manoos to be “pushed out of Mumbai.”

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting at Mantralaya on the issue of 65 unauthorised buildings in the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal limits, Shinde accused the opposition of reviving the Marathi plank only because elections are approaching. “For 10 to 15 years, Marathi families lived in transit camps without any serious attempt to provide them their rightful homes. Now, ahead of polls, the same people are raising slogans in the name of Marathi identity,” he said.

The meeting was chaired by Urban Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Asim Gupta. Senior officials including Thane Collector Dr Shrikrishna Panchal and KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goyal were present.

Shinde said thousands of families had been left vulnerable after a court ordered demolition of the 65 buildings declared illegal. Residents, he said, were victims of developer fraud and now face eviction.
According to him, discussions centred on finding relief “within the framework of the court’s directions”. He suggested that residents form housing societies to complete pending legal formalities, which would help transfer land ownership rights to them.

He noted, however, that technical hurdles remain. “Registration of societies and updating property records is pending. More than half of these buildings are in a position where registration can begin immediately. This process must be fast-tracked,” he said. He also sought quicker action against the developers involved.

Shinde said the Urban Development Department, the Thane Collectorate and the Kalyan–Dombivli Municipal Corporation have been instructed to jointly prepare a proposal for submission to the next cabinet meeting.

Stepping up his criticism of the UBT Sena, Shinde said the Mahayuti government had delivered on commitments to provide housing to Marathi residents, and claimed that Marathi voters were firmly behind the ruling alliance. The opposition, he said, was “staring at defeat” and was therefore “trying to shift blame onto the Election Commission.”
